7 Home Remedies For Clogged Ears

By Shereen

If you experience clogged ears, the first thing you should do is not panic.

Most times, clogged ears are not caused by anything serious or life-threatening.

However, there are specific home remedies that you can do to unclog your ears.

These remedies are straightforward and effective, and you can do them without going to the doctor.

Symptoms of Clogged Ears

Many different factors can cause clogged ears.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, then you may have blocked ear passages:

  • Pain in the ear or jaw when chewing food
  • Earwax buildup
  • Infection
  • Allergies
  • Earache
  • Ear feeling full
  • Hearing loss
  • Dizziness
  • Ear itching
  • Discharge or odor in the ear
  • Coughing

Some of these common symptoms may not mean that you have clogged ears, but it is always best to consult a doctor so that you will know for sure.

What Are The Causes of Clogged Ears

Glands produce the wax in your ears in the outer ear canal skin.

The wax and microscopic hairs in these passageways catch dust and other particles that might harm deeper ear structures, such as the eardrum.

With most individuals, a small quantity of earwax regularly makes its way to the ear canal.

Then it's washed away or falls out when fresh wax replaces it at the aperture.

However, if your ears produce excessive earwax, it may accumulate and obstruct your ear canal.

People who attempt to remove earwax on their own by inserting cotton swabs or other objects into their ears tend to get more earwax blockages.

Rather than eliminating earwax, this typically pushes it deeper into the ear canal.

Home Remedies For Clogged Ears

Clogged ears are one of the most common ailments that people face.

In fact, many of us suffer from clogged ears at some point in life. Fortunately, you are lucky because clogged ears can be cured at home.

Therefore, the first step is to identify the causes of clogged ears which are listed above.

Here is a list of home remedies that will help you get rid of clogged ears

#1 Mineral Oil

Mineral oil is one of the best options that you can avail to get rid of clogged-up ears, and it is entirely natural and safe.

It targets ear wax buildup, kills the bacteria causing infection in the ears, and heals the ears.

  • Dissolve one teaspoon of mineral oil in one cup of warm water.
  • Now put a few drops of this solution into the affected ears and allow it to remain there for 10 minutes.
  • After 10 minutes, remove the oil using an ear syringe and clean the ear with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol.
  • Do this once a day for a few days until your ear is clean.

Additionally, massage the outer portion of your ears and blow your nose after this treatment to remove excess wax from your nose.

However, if your blocked hearing is due to a buildup of fluid rather than mucus, avoid using mineral oil because it might worsen your condition.

Instead, consult a doctor because this condition might require medication.

#2 Tea Bags With Warm Water

Tea bags have anti-inflammatory properties, which help soothe the inflamed tissue in the inner ear that causes you to feel pain during the cold season.

tea bags for home remedies on clogged ears
  1. Pour hot water over two tea bags and steep for about five minutes.
  2. Now put the tea bags on the affected area and cover it with a warm towel for about 15 minutes.
  3. Remove them and repeat this process a few times daily until the pain subsides.

Note: If your eyes are sensitive to water, you can use an eye cup to cover them.

#3 Warm Compress

Warm compresses are a good choice if you have a mild case of blockage in your ear canals.

Heat and steam soften the waxy secretions as well as helps clear the passages of the obstructed Eustachian tubes, thereby unclogging your ears.

To do this, soak a washcloth in hot water and place it over your ear for a few minutes until it cools down.

Repeat the process two to three times a day until you get rid of your blocked hearing problem.

# 4 Gargle With Salt Water

Gargling with salt water will do two things when it comes to clogged ears.

First, the salt will flush out the accumulated mucus and other debris in your upper respiratory tract, thereby reducing the symptoms of sinusitis.

Second, it will help loosen up any built-up mucous that might obstruct your Eustachian tubes and prevent any buildup of fluids in your inner ears.

To perform this remedy,

  • Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in one cup of water and stir well.
  • Rinse your mouth with this mixture for a few minutes, then spit it out.

#5 Rubbing Alcohol

I know this one sounds strange but trust me, I used rubbing alcohol many times in the past with excellent results.

This little gem helps prevent cerumen impaction.

Cerumen impaction is a buildup of hardened wax that blocks the ear and causes you to lose your hearing.

To use rubbing alcohol

  • Pour a few drops into the affected part of your ears and allow it to remain there for 5 to 7 minutes.
  • Make sure to tilt your head so the rubbing alcohol will move around and get deep into the ear canal.
  • Remove it using a cotton swab/ball or soft tissue/washcloth.

Repeat this process once daily for a few weeks until you get rid of the blockage.

#6 Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide removes earwax by breaking it up and making it easier to remove.

Hydrogen peroxide can also kill the bacteria that cause earwax to build up and cause pain and inflammation.

For this remedy, you will need.

  • One tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide.
  • One tablespoon of white vinegar.
  • Mix both ingredients in a ratio of half and half in a bowl.
  • Now put a few drops of this solution into the affected ears and allow it to remain there for a couple of minutes.
  • Then, rinse out the solution using an ear syringe and clean the ear with a cotton ball or pad.

Do this once a day for a few days until your ear is clean.

#7 Vicks VapoRub

In Vicks Vaporub, eucalyptus oil and menthol help fight bacteria and infection while softening waxy buildup in the ear canal.

To use this remedy,

  • Apply a small amount of Vicks on your fingertip.
  • Then put a small amount behind the ear that is clogged.
  • Leave overnight or all day long, basically 12 to 20 hrs.

Alternatively, you can use a dry cloth and warm it up in the microwave for a few seconds to make it slightly warm.

Place the warm cloth on the affected area and keep it on for about 15 to 20 minutes until the vapors penetrate deep inside your ear and loosen the buildup.

To Sum it Up

In conclusion, these home remedies are very effective and help eliminate clogged ears.

Besides, they will help you stay in good shape by keeping your ears clean.

Nonetheless, if your ear problems persist, you should consult a doctor who can guide you on the right course of treatment.
